It's remarkable how quickly IP has become the one-size-fits-all solution for networking and communications. I've been harping on this subject for the past few years, but even a year ago some Data Communications readers would argue with me about IP's preeminence. Few would argue the point anymore. Sure, circuit-switching may still form the underpinning of some networks. But the question is no longer how IP fits with ATM, but how ATM and other lower-layer protocols play with IP.
