TR26: 2010: Technical Reference for Deep Excavation requires a detailed assessment of buildings in proximity to the site. The requirement is an important part of a risk management process for the design of temporary works for deep excavations. This paper will present the key elements of the risk management process for design and construction. It will demonstrate that the risk management process for temporary works design for deep excavation is not merely to control the predicted wall deflection to a limit of 0.5%H, where H is the depth of excavation, which is an arbitrary value for a given site. The risk management process requires to go through the stages of hazard identification, risk assessment, risk control and risk monitoring. By following the risk management process the design and construction of deep excavations can achieve the objectives of safety and cost efficiency.
