Scandinavian Volunteers in the Anglo-Boer War, 1899-1902

In the spring of 1899, Mr Axel Christer Helmfrid Uggla, a Swedish engineer, who, since 1890, had been working in the Transvaal as Head of the Neder-landsch-Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorweg Maatschappij (NZASM) Railway Workshops in Pretoria, took the initiative to form the 'Scandinavian Organisation' in the Transvaal. The main purpose of this organisation was to find work and housing for unemployed fellow Scandinavians and to raise funds to aid them (Uddgren, 1924, pp8f). This organisation had a Central Committee in Pretoria and a Local Committee in Johannesburg.
