摘要

Historians of the first air war remind us that a pilot's life expectancy was a matter of mere months, if not weeks. But the truth maywell be that many of those First World War airmen survived to find their way back to the lives they had left behind, unheralded in the shadows of those who went down in flames, yetforever changed. Charles Wilton of Durban, South Africa, was one. The war changed him so profoundly that he did not want to go home. Perhaps he found himself exactly where he had secretly craved to be.
