Sailor, Soldier is the memoirs of Commander (retired) Edward Carey Tyndale-Biscoe, Royal Navy, edited by his great nephew, David Tyndale-Biscoe, who has rescued from obscurity an elegant piece of Victoriana. Edward Carey Tyndale-Biscoe died in 1941. However, his memoirs give us an insight into the mindset of the Victorian Age. Tyndale-Biscoe gives us the world view of a younger son of a gentry family.rnGiven the modern interest in genealogy, the introductory chapter has a contemporary feel. The first gem is to be found in Chapter Three. Here the reader discovers that Edward Tyndale-Biscoe was one of the heroes of the battle of Tamaai, where the Dervishes broke a British square. This should have made his career, but he subsequently, unfortunately, served with a captain who was mentally disturbed.
