In the following article, in Afrikaans, DrJ J Retief, DWD provides a history of the De Wet Decoration and Medal, which were introduced to meet the need fora long servicernand efficiency medal for members of the South African Commando units at a time when such medals had already been introduced for service with the South African Permanent Force and the Active Citizen Force. Dr Retief begins the article by examining the political circumstances which led to a situation in which the well-known and much admired Boergeneral, Christiaan Rudolph de Wet, did not receive a medal for his outstanding leadership in the Anglo-Boer War. It goes on to explain the decision, many decades later, to institute, firstly, the De Wet Decoration and, later, the De Wet Medal, with detailed descriptions of these awards.
