UTRECHT DISTRICT and the ANGLO-ZULU WAR, 1879

In 1879, the small village of Utrecht and its surrounding district was the most remote administrative unit of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR), bordering Natal to the west and the Zulu country to the east. Its turbulent internal history over a short period of some thirty years and quixotic relations with the neighbouring Zulu polity played no small part in the genesis of the Anglo-Zulu War that started on 11 January that year.
