Night Vision Developments: Tactical Battlefield Detection and Observation

MT looks at advantages sought from having the best sensors as measured by the figure of merit for I2 or the ability to detect the tiniest temperature differences and build HD images using multi-megapixel chips; alongside the edge gained from combining and/or fusing different sensors, and digitising signals and sharing images, sym-bology and other intelligence over battlefield networks. Most of these developments are embodied in Sagem's JIM-LR long-range multi-function IR binoculars, a repeat order for 200 of which from an unnamed NATO country the company announced on 24 March. This is the latest in a series of recent orders placed by export customers and the French military for JIM-LR, which is establishing itself strongly in the international market, for example, says Sagem, it is deployed by more than 40 countries with over 9,000 units either delivered or on order, including 2,000 for French forces.
