Internet Wireless Access: 802.11 and Beyond

As consumers become increasingly mobile and nomadic they request on-demand wireless Internet services, both in private and public environments. The explosion of 802.11 networks in recent years is making the dream of easy, on-demand, ubiquitous, and fast Internet access a reality, but with the widespread WLAN use new challenges arise. The key points of the current success of 802.11 WLANs (e.g., the use of free spectrum and the "Ethernet like" simplicity) pose several questions about the widespread use of this technology in the future. For this reason, researchers are currently investigating, from several different perspectives, solutions for enhancing the WLAN technologies. The eight papers selected for this special issue propose solutions to several hot research issues, such as: mobility management, congestion control, service differentiation, and power management.
