The CLIB-Graduate Cluster “Industrial Biotechnology” is an innovative, structured doctorate program for excellent German and international students graduated in appropriate fields. It is a joint initiative of the three German universities Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, TU Dortmund University and Bielefeld University. Thematically, the graduate school is based on four areas of research: Expression, Biocatalysis, Downstream Processing and PolyOmics. Expression, dealing with protein expression systems, is the main focus at Düsseldorf University, whereas Downstream processing and process development is centred at Dortmund University. Biocatalysis with isolated enzymes as well as with whole cells combined with chemical syntheses is executed at both universities in Dortmund and Düsseldorf. Finally, PolyOmics research is centred at Bielefeld University and ties all -omics technologies, namely genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics as well as metabolomics, and includes at a high level bioinformatics. Currently, more than 80 excellent German and international CLIB graduates are inscribed at one of the partner universities, according to the topic of their project, and pursue their research in close association with industrial companies. After a first “CLIB-GC Special Issue” which was published in Vol. 159/3 of the Journal of Biotechnology, the current Special Issue communicates more results obtained in the frame of the CLIB-Graduate Cluster and its above mentioned four key research fields.
