Poland's position in the global economy

In recent years Poland has been relatively successful in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), mainly in anchor industries such as automobile manufacturing, although the government is now promoting the country as a hub for emerging, technology-intensive business services. To that end, Poland will continue to benefit from its membership in the EU, with its central location and access to EU markets. Given these factors, Poland's strong economic fundamentals are expected to continue to draw foreign capital to the country. However, the government of the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, in power since 2015, risks tempering investor confidence. Although Poland remains open to international capital, the PiS is sceptical of foreign investment and launched a "repolonisation" programme aimed at repatriating the ownership of key industries. Since 2015 PiS has passed a series of reforms to entrench its control over the country's institutions. Moreover, several components of the PiS policy agenda complicate the country's relationship with the EU. The economic recession as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic is substantially less deep than in most other east European countries, making the Polish economy one of the most resilient in the region. However, the slowdown in Europe, with complications surrounding Brexit, is likely to affect economic activity in 2021.
