1. Poland's relationship to the EU has become increasingly contentious following the election of the current government-led by the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party-in 2015. As of end-January 2020, Poland was embroiled in confrontations with the EU over various issues, including the country's controversial reforms to the judiciary and refusal to comply with an EU resettlement scheme for refugees. 2.Reflecting the country's strong reliance on coal for electricity generation, the government declined to accept the 2050 climate-neutrality target of the European Green Deal, a new policy roadmap published by the European Commission in December 2019. The policies, which also include an expansion of the EU's emissions trading system, are expected to be reviewed for adoption by the EU institutions later in 2020.
