To the Editor: It appears that previous case-control studies suggestive of an adverse effect of gastric acid suppression on the incidence of community-acquired enteric infections are inevitably associated with a selection bias. In investigating the cause-effect relationship between proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and enteric infections, Dr Brophy and colleagues (1) made an effort to minimize the bias by comparing the exposed group with three control groups (non-exposed self-controls and time-period-matched non-PPI controls).
