Response to Drs Shearer and Ford

To the Editor: We appreciate the interesting and thoughtful comments provided by Drs Shearer and Ford (1) regarding our study. Although we agree that the study conducted by Ford et al. (2) demonstrated that ispaghula husk was superior to placebo, the authors themselves comment that "When only high quality studies were considered in the analysis this heterogeneity was diminished, but the difference in effect on symptoms in favor of ispaghula husk only reached marginal statistical significance".
