1. Since 2020, the government has introduced a host of measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic, including a national quarantine. As of end-January 2023, almost all restrictions had been lifted and 56.8 of Poland's population had received a full course of vaccination against the coronavirus.2. Poland's relationship to the EU has become increasingly contentious following the election of the current government-led by the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party-in 2015. As of end-January 2023, Poland was embroiled in disputes with the EU over various issues, including the country's controversial judicial reforms.3. In March 2022 the government adopted Energy Strategy 2040 (PEP2040), which aims for renewables to account for half of the country's electricity mix by 2050, up from around 16 in mid-2022. However, Poland is likely to backtrack on this goal by increasing coal production as part of efforts to wean off Russian gas, following the onset of the war in Ukraine and Russia's weaponisation of energy supplies to Europe.
