摘要

When the first astronomers looked up atthe night sky thousands of years ago, theyunderstandably had little ability to measureor understand distances in space. They interpreted theheavens in many ways, including as concentric spherescentred on the Earth where the stars were fixed and ofequal distance in their own sphere.
