摘要

1.In terms of method of study of the important problem relative to additional backfill pressures against the walls of lock chambers, docks, etc., Gol'tsman's work is a step forward. Unfortunately, however, we consider erroneous certain positions that he takes in the study.2.In our opinion, the reactive pressures of the backfill soil against the walls of locks, docks, etc., can correctly be determined by utilizing positions proven by experiment.3.It is necessary to conduct special experimental investigations (integral studies in large laboratory pans) using existing and specially developed modelling rules. The problem associated with variations in the pliability coefficient with depth of rock-free soils must be simultaneously studied by conducting field investigations using the pressure-bulb method, particularly in the construction of locks, docks, etc. We must remember that only by the appropriate method will the interpreted results of experimental studies and field observations assist in solving the problem presented in the paper under review.
