THE SCHMIDT REACTION

The term "Schmidt reaction" describes a family of related reactions that use hydrazoic acid or an alkyl azide to react with an electrophile. A few representative examples are depicted in Eqs. 1-3. Depending on the reactants employed, the product of the reaction can contain an amide or a number of related functional groups (Fig. 1). Despite this diversity, all Schmidt reactions have the characteristic of incorporating nitrogen into the product and it is this feature that has placed this chemistry among the most useful means for the synthesis of nitrogenous compounds.
