The furan ring plays important roles in many areas of chemistry and biology. This oxygen-containing heterocyclic ring system is a component of a variety of natural product structures, such as those found in pheromone 1 from the beetle Galeru-cella clamariensis, epothilone macrolides exemplified by 2, and marine products like bipinnatin J (3). The furan ring is also embedded within the backbones of substances that have a broad range of biological activities, including insecticides (resmethrin (4)), therapeutic drugs (ranitidine (5), a histamine H2-receptor antagonist), antibiotics (cefuroxime(6) from the cephalosporin family), and antihypertensives (prazosin (7)).
