THE REDUCTION OF X-RAY PROPORTIONAL COUNTER BACKGROUND BY PULSE SHAPE DISCRIMINATION

The rise times of pulses produced by X-rays within an X-ray proportional counter are well defined and shorter than those of most of the background pulses. As has already been reported elsewhere, it is practicable to remove most of the background spectrum by means of pulse shape discrimination. The method adopted here, using Harwell 2000 Series Units, together with some of the results obtained with a range of differing X-ray proportional counters, forms the subject of this paper.
