To avoid cracks during the welding of workpieces made of grey cast iron by means of an electron beam, an additive material made of an appropriately alloyed chrome steel is added to the welding zone. As a result of the introduction of the chrome steel, a welded material results whose chemical composition of essential alloy constituents contains less than 23% of carbon and more than 8.0% of chromium.
