The paper presents some applications or principles and engineering tools applied in thermal systems design. Based on these principles the process engineers can optimize the thermal system, meaning overall utility consumption and set process and utility system configuration, prior to final detailed thermal system simulation and optimization, relating to four targets: 1. Energy target: gelling the Maximum Rate of Energy Using (MREU) within a thermal system (minimum utility consumption from the outer thermal system) 2. Engineering target: getting thermal system configurations/topology according to MREU; 3. Economical target: the optimum rate between annual exploitation costs and equipment investments. 4. Ecological target: to minimize the waste of the process.
