Experiment was conducted at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Regional Research Station, Karnal for three consecutive years (2003-06) on plant crop with the objective to develop eco-friendly nutrient management strategy for sugarcane. The treatment consisted of 100, 75 and 50% of recommended N (150 kg/ha) and P_2O_5 (50 kg/ha) through inorganic fertilizers alone and 25% N through different organic sources I.e. FYM or pressmud or vermicompost with and without bio-fertilizers (Azotobactor & PSB). Application of 100 % NP through inorganic + 25% N through FYM + biofertilizer ( Azotobacter + PSB) produced highest number of tillers, millable canes, cane yield (77.4 t/ha) and sugar yield (8.64 t/ha) and this treatment was at par with that of 75% NP through inorganic + 25% NP through FYM or pressmud + biofertilzer. Highest net returns (Rs. 40959/ha) and benefit cost ratio (1.77) was obtained in treatment where 100% NP through inorganic fertilizers + 25% N through FYM + biofertilizer (Azotobacter + PSB) followed by the treatment where75% NP through inorganic fertilizers + 25% NP through FYM or press mud + biofertilzer and lowest net returns (Rs.31947/ha) and benefit cost ratio (1.62) was recorded where 50% NP through inorganic fertilizers + 25% N through FYM + biofertilizers were applied. The soil pH, EC and available P did not change under different treatments. There was some increase in organic carbon and available K in the soil where 25% N was applied through organic manures (FYM/pressmud).
