SURFACE FLAW SENSITIVITY OF GLASS FIBRES WITH NANO-REINFORCEMENT IN POLYMER COATING

摘要

The severe surface flaws of brittle materials can be 'healed' using coating. Here, we describe an inexpensive and applicable process by which a nanometer-scale polymer coating layer based on styrene butadiene with varied clays and nanotubes, as environmental barrier coating layer, was applied to alkali-resistant glass (ARG) and the E-glass fibres. Our data indicates that the glass fibre with the nanoscale coating shows significantly improved both corrosion resistance to alkali and its mechanical properties. Moreover, an assessment of changes in the fibre surface nanomechanical properties is provided and a strong correlation between the tensile strength, roughness and Griffith fracture predictions is noted.
