In 1995, Mekong River Commission (MRC), a unique organization for the regional cooperation for the development of the Mekong River basin in the Indochina region, was established under a new agreement among Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Viet Nam. The Agreement on the Cooperation for the Sustainable Development of the Mekong River Basin was signed on April 5 last year aiming at sustainable development, utilization, management and conservation of the water and related resources of the Mekong River under the new agreement. MRC legally replaced the previous Mekong Committee (MC) established in 1957 and the subsequent Interim Mekong Committee (IMC) in 1978.
