International Symposium on Land and Water Management for Sustainable Environment in the Aral Sea Basin

The Research Group on Environment in the Aral Sea Basin of the Japanese Society of Irrigation, Drainage and Reclamation Engineering (JSIDRE), led by Dr. Hikaru Tsutsui of Kinki University, has completed three years of cooperative research on environmental issues in the Aral Sea basin in 1996. This research work has been carried out under the umbrella of the Global Environment Committee of JSIDRE, chaired by Dr. Hiroyasu Shimura of Nihon University, and supported by the Global Environmental Fund of Japan Environment Corporation (JEC). At the end of the three years research activities, the above committee of JSIDRE organized the "Third International Symposium on Land and Water Management for Sustainable Environment in the Aral Sea Basin" in Tokyo on March 1st, 1996. This symposium was approved by JEC and Science Council of Japan, and supported by Japan Agricultural Land Development Agency (JALDA), The Japanese Institute of Irrigation and Drainage (JIID), and Agricultural Development Consultants Association (ADECA). The symposium was held at the Conference Hall of the Nogyo-Doboku-Kaikan, and around seventy scientists and engineers were present at it.
