Rural and Environmental Engineering (REE) had a new start last year as a report-oriented journal, aiming to bring more information on the various areas of rural and environmental engineering. The author would like to take this opportunity to describethe major fields which REE is expected to cover in its articles. This journal is issued by the Japanese Society of Irrigation, Drainage and Reclamation Engineering (JSIDRE). JSIDRE has some 12,800 members, of whom 1,000 are researchers, 800 are students, and 11,000 are engineers mostly working in Japan.
