The Japan Agricultural Land Development Agency (JALDA) is a quasi-governmental agency established by government legislation enacted in 1974. It is an independent corporate body. Its predecessor organization was the Agricultural Land Development Machinery Corporation established in 1955. JALDA undertakes both overseas and domestic project operations under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in accordance with the government's project guidelines. JALDA's domestic operations are focused on improving farmland and water supply and drainage facilities, with a view to increasing the productivity of Japan's agriculture and improving its infrastructure. Every year, the agency operates in about 20 districts, investing approximately 300 million dollar. JALDA commenced its overseas operations in 1982. JALDA plans and conducts two categories of overseas cooperation schemes. In the first category, studies of agricultural and rural development in developing countries are supported by subsidies given through the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. In the second category are development studies commissioned by the Japan International Cooperation Agency(JICA).
