The present invention relates to a methodfor the detection and systematic quantification of the presence ofdomoic acid (DOM) in problem samples, such as extracts frommarine food or water samples, through the use ofexcitable cells in an extracellular medium with total sodium ionor partially substituted. The exposure of cell culturesexcitable to DOM in a medium like the one mentioned above, results in adecrease in cell viability greater than that observed inpresence of sodium ion, while pretreatment with ainhibitor of DOM-activated receptors said inhibitortoxic effect With this method, it is possible to determine the presenceof DOM concentrations in the test sample that would not bedetectable in the presence of sodium ion in the extracellular medium.
