Revised guidance on structural use of high-alumina cement

My article in CONCRETE July/August 2003 related to the Draft British Standard BS EN 14647:2003 Calcium aluminate cement: composition, specifications and conformity criteria. Calcium aluminate cement is a new name, introduced by the manufacturers, for high-alumina cement (HAC) which acquired notoriety due to a series of structural roof failures in the 1970s. In that article, I pointed out certain flaws in terminology and, more importantly, I criticised the inclusion of an annex on the use of HAC in structures.
